We all love a good story don’t we? And we believe it’ll even be more exciting if it’s about one of the world’s most beloved toys, the Steiff Bears. So hop on the bus and we’ll go drive along memory lane together as we recount how these toys came into existence and captured millions of hearts across the globe.
Margarete, the founder of the German-based plush toy company, contracted polio when she was young leaving her bound on a wheelchair. Such predicament however did not tame her and her talents to shine through.
Despite her father’s qualms, she enrolled in a sewing class where she learned the craft of dressmaking. She later on joined her sisters in their shop and worked as a seamstress. When her sisters proceeded on with their family and personal lives, the shop was left with Margarete.
One fateful day, she caught glimpse of an elephant on a magazine. It is from here where she got the idea of making pincushions in the likes of the animal. She sold these to her friends but later noticed that instead of sticking pins in them, the children had fun playing with them. This gave her the idea of making plush toys in the likes of other animals such as pigs, dogs and cats.
Her business spread like wildfire and soon enough she was the talk of the town. She even needed the help of her nephew Richard to run the company who joined her by 1897. The same nephew had a certain fondness for bears that he designed a toy in the likeness of it. This was in 1902. An American businessman caught glimpse of the toy and ordered a whole three thousand of them and brought these to the United States. It surely became a huge hit from then on that by 1907, the company manufactured an estimated number of 974,000 Steiff bears alone. Such output continued to surge up as years went by.
What made the company famous was not only the fact that they were the first to create the teddy bear but also because of the quality of the toys they produce. Margarete initiated the so called Steiff purity law that states “Only the best is good enough for children”. This implies that all toys have to go under meticulous quality checks to insure that they are safe for children of all ages.
